Pitt Missing Reserve DT to Start Season

The Pitt Panthers will be without a defensive tackle to open the 2023 season.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers will be short a major part of their defensive line as they open the 2023 season against Wofford.

Redshirt freshman Sean FitzSimmons was dressed and went through individual warmups with the Panthers, but did not participate in final walkthroughs with the rest of the defensive line.

FitzSimmons was a standout during training camp and, without him in the lineup, the Panthers will get a chance to see what Elliot Donald and Isaiah Neal can do. Pitt is deep at the top of the defensive tackle position, but losing FitzSimmons is a major blow to the depth at that position.

The former three-star recruit played in three games last season, tallying two tackles and a sack in the Panthers' Week 3 matchup against FCS foe, Rhode Island. He figured to see a major step up in playing time this season, but will have to wait another week.
